of Terms and Acronyms

Aframax – Average Freight Rate Assessment. It is a method to determine freight dollars to be paid a tanker owner for transporting petroleum products including crude oil. It applies to tankers in the 70,000 to 120,000 DWT size class.
AMP – Alternative Marine Power
ANS – Alaskan North Slope. Crude oil produced in the North Slope region of Alaska.
ANWR – “Arctic National Wildlife Refuge”. A potential oil producing area in Alaska near the North Slope that is currently not open to exploration and production.
AQI – Air Quality Impact
AQMP – Air Quality Management Plan
BACT – Best Available Control Technology
BBL – Barrel – one barrel contains 42 U.S. Gallons
CAAQS – California Ambient Air Quality Standards
CARB – California Air Resources Board
CO – Carbon Monoxide
Criteria Pollutants – Air pollutants for which EPA has established an ambient air quality standard: carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen oxides, ozone, particulates and sulfur oxides
DWT – Dead Weight Ton
ERC – Emission Reduction Credits

HA - Health Assessment
HFO – Heavy Fuel Oil
MDO – Marine Distillate Oil
MGO – Marine Gas Oil
mg. – milligrams
MM – Mitigation Measure
MW – (????)
NAAQS – National Ambient Air Quality Standards
NOX – Oxide of Nitrogen
OGV – Ocean Going Vessel
Ozone Precursors – Air contaminants that contribute to the formation of ozone in the lower atmosphere: ROG, NOX
Panamax – The largest size crude oil tanker that can travel through the Panama Canal (up to 70,000 dead weight tons)
PADD – Petroleum Administration for Defense District. A geographic aggregation of the 50 States and the District of Columbia into five districts. PADD 5 comprises the West Coast states - Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.
PEP – Pacific Energy
PM – Particulate Matter
PM10 - Particulate Matter less than 10 microns
PM2.5 - Particulate Matter less than 2.5 microns
POLA – Port of Los Angeles
PSIG – Pounds per square inch (gauge) This is a pressure measurement
ROG – Reactive Organic Gases
ROI – Region of Influence
SCAB – South Coast Air Basin
SCAQMD – South Coast Air Quality Management District
SOX – Oxides of Sulfur
Suezmax – The largest size crude oil tanker that can travel through the Suez Canal (120,000 – 200,000 dead weight tons)
Syn-Bit – Synthetic-Bitumen. A blend of synthetic crude oil and bitumen produced from oil sands in western Canada.
TAN – Total Acid Number. A laboratory test that measures the naphthenic acid content of crude oil.
US DOE – “United States Department of Energy.
VLCC - Very Large Crude Carrier (This applies to tankers on the 200,000 to 325, 000 dead weight tons size class)
VOC – Volatile Organic Compounds
VSRP – Vessel Speed Reduction Program
WT – weight
